Fashion in Motion: San Francisco Fashion Week Designers Unveil Custom Vespas

Portion of proceeds from motor scooter sales donated to Dress for Success®

SAN FRANCISCO— San Francisco Fashion Week and Vespa San Francisco put fashion in motion today when they unveiled four stylish Vespa motor scooters custom designed by participating fashion designers. From rich fabrics, colorful paint and accessory enhancements, designers Christina Hurvis Couture, Loungewear Betty, Saffron Rare Threads and Rock & Republic each created a custom Vespa scooter reflecting the style and spirit of their fashion collections.

The Vespas will be unveiled at San Francisco Fashion Week (August 26-29), at the Palace of Fine Arts. Available for purchase, a portion of the proceeds will go to Dress for Success®, the non-profit organization that helps low-income women make tailored transitions into the workforce.

“We are excited to be a part of the first-ever San Francisco Fashion Week, and wanted to find a creative, stylish and hip way to make our mark,” says John Bloch from Vespa San Francisco. “Several top New York-based designers have created custom Vespa scooters, so it is time for San Francisco to get in on the fun. We’re delighted with the results, as each scooter is distinctive and representative of the designer who created it.”

Heels on Wheels is how Loungewear Betty designer Monni McCleary describes her custom Vespa. “I wanted a fun, vintage pin-up-girl feel to represent the glamour girl on the go.” She envisions a modern-day Brigitte Bardot scooting down Mission Street, strapped in her Manolo Blahniks enroute to meet her secret French lover for a cappuccino. “This Vespa owner is smart, successful and gorgeous—she loves the color pink, stylish shoes and all things leopard print,” said McCleary.

The Rock & Republic Vespa is totally chromed out with all kinds of accessories. The idea was a Harley, with black leather and lots of details. Rock & Republic’s vision is guided by rock n’ roll, superior quality and sex appeal. The girl riding this designer’s Vespa is a hard core, kick ass chic just out to have a good time.

The Saffron Ajira Vespa reflects the philosophy of the Saffron Rare Threads collection—sleek, feminine and sophisticated. The scooter’s pearl white body features the Saffron logo and color accents, and the classic leather topcase—for important documents, plane tickets, a laptop and lip gloss—that straps onto the chrome luggage rack. The Ajira Vespa cruises from the conference room to the cocktail lounge—because the Saffron girl doesn’t have time to deal with parking!

The formal, upscale Christina Hurvis Couture Vespa is inspired by ancient Indian motifs that symbolize life and hope. Whether used for marriage or every day transport, the path is sure to be enjoyable. A silver-embroidered white leather seat and back rest, silver-brushed metal decals, shiny chrome finishings and glittering Swarovski crystal appliqués create a high-society scooter for the socialite-on-the-go.

The fashion-forward Vespas will be unveiled at San Francisco Fashion Week, and will be on display at the Palace of Fine Arts. Live fashion photo shoots will seduce the audience each day as models and designers are photographed editorial-style with the scooters.

If you fall in love with one of them, the good news is that they are for sale! You can purchase the scooters at the Vespa SF dealership located at 1450 Franklin Street in San Francisco after the event. Portions of the proceeds will be donated to Fashion Week’s beneficiary Dress for Success®, which provides interview suits and career development training to more than 45,000 women in 79 cities each year.

San Francisco Fashion Week will be held at The Palace of Fine Arts from August 26 to 29, 2004, and will showcase Spring 2005 Collections from 15 emerging and established fashion designers including: Besnik, Christina Hurvis Couture, Colleen Quen, Evarize, Fornarina, Hieros, Lily Samii, Liz Bang, Loungewear Betty, Rock & Republic, Saffron Rare Threads, Starr D., Zilda by Flavia, The Art Institute of California – San Francisco and The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM Alumni Show.

The “Fashion Week Boutique” will provide show attendees a chance for instant shopping gratification, featuring 20 vendors daily selling fashions, handbags, scarves, jewelry and beauty products, many of which are regularly seen on the glossy pages of top fashion magazines. Designers hail from NY, LA and the Bay Area.

San Francisco Fashion Week sponsors include SF Weekly, Zink Magazine, San Francisco Magazine, SFStation.com, JetBlue Airways, NARS Cosmetics, Vespa SF, Kerastase, Stonestown Shopping Center, W San Francisco Hotel, Joie de Vivre – the Commodore and Phoenix Hotels, Presidio Merchant Partners LLC, Metromint, Spa-Bar, Hair Play, Blush Beauty, Guess Eyewear, POM Wonderful, Offset Music and top local radio stations Wild 94.9, 106 KMEL and Star 101.3.
