Sue
Wong Fall/Winter 2004/2005 Collection
1920's Era Inspires Female Flights of Fantasy
Sue Wong's exotic harem girl and Andalusian gypsy represent eternal
female archetypes embodied in her spectacular Fall / Winter 2004-2005
Collection from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios.
Wong presents the Odalisque, a beautiful and exotic harem girl who
holds the prince captive with her allure, in the form of silk georgette,
silk devoré, and silk charmeuse evening dresses ready for the
fall social season. Her choice of color palette includes sienna, gold,
copper, cinnebar, and jasper for a distinctly opulent, arabian style.

Sue Wong Fall/Winter 2004-2005 Nocture Collection plays off of the
gypsy muse with Flamenco gowns, plunging necklines, and layered ruffles.
This muse was a literary figure modeled after Zelda Fitzgerald, Colette,
and the flapper icon. This look evokes the classic Jazz Age with elongated
dress torso, uneven hemlines, and that "improvised" feel.
A strong element of fantasy informs the work of Sue Wong, magically
transforming the woman into a darkly elegant vamp or celestial angel,
as her heart leads. Sue Wong Fall/Winter 2004-2005 Collection embodies
this transformation.

mon petit oiseau Spring 2004 Collection
Designer Tracy Wilkinson
brings the joys of urban edginess to casual spring summer looks Happy Spring... Perhaps
the joys of spring are best expressed by a smiling lass dressed in a flirty combination
of constructed bottoms and country tops, with a picnic dress thrown in for special
occasions. mon petit oiseau Spring 2004 puts a new spin on spring/summer adventure
by matching boyish fabric styling with neutral stripes and theme prints like chickadees.
The result is a bevy of coy models with subtle exposure and girlish gaits; the
perfect rhythm for summer escapes from the city.
Fashion designer Tracy Wilkinson of mon petit oiseau creates an urban look that
incorporates edgy details like silver eyelets on an overall strap chickadee mini-dress.
The upwardly cascading illustrative print leads directly to the casual overslung
straps for a more formal appeal. This theme of mixing casual and formal continues
in a herringbone knicker design matched with whimsy japanese floral top bordered
in lilac. "Push-pull" looks of classic menswear fabrics contrast with quirky carnival
colors throughout the Spring 2004 Collection from mon petit oiseau.
Of special note for this season, designer Tracy Wilkinson teamed up in October
to design men and women’s t-shirts for Artists for Amnesty project. A portion
of the funds raised were earmarked for the organization's international campaign
to end violence against women. Artists for Amnesty was held at La Boheme Restaurant
in West Hollywood. The "one-of-a-kind" tees were modeled by Brendan Fraser, Mia
Kirshner, Poppy Montgomery, and Jennifer Beals, with the event hosted by Academy
Award winning actress Mira Sorvino.
Joining in the festive Spring 2004 runway fun as sponsors for mon petit oiseau
were shoe designer Sigerson Morrison, with the launch of the affordable "Belle"
line of flats, pumps, and strappys, and Tarte Cosmetics, by creator Maureen Kelly.
Celebrity hair stylist Laurent D of Prive Salon in LA provided the feminine cuts
to compliment Wilkinson's signature spring looks. mon petit oiseau Spring 2004

Yoanna House, America's Next Top Model Winner, debuts at Mercedes Benz Fashion
Week in Los Angeles
Dreams Do Come True One couldn't miss the soft smile on Yoanna House's
face as she appeared on the runway in the dynamic Petro Zillia Fall 2004 ready-to-wear
collection by Nony Tochterman; after all, House had only one week earlier won
the America's Next Top Model contest on UPN television network in front
of millions, and here she was living the dream of walking down the catwalk for
an emerging fashion design star. In later shows, she would adopt the expressionless
posture that defines a top catwalk model, but for now, Yoanna was basking in the
moment. And the moment was grand; the audience response was delayed as many took
a second look and thought, "wait a minute, isn't that ...?", but then
a strong applause started and grew as Yoanna reached the end of the runway, made
her turn, and started back.
The buzz was electric; here she was straight from reality television - a former
babysitter now walking the runways of international fashion. At Fashion Week,
there were varying opinions as to who should've won on the show America's Next
Top Model. And while other participants were around (e.g. Mercedes Scelbe-Shorte
walked for a number of designers), Yoanna House was the name that kept popping
up: "She's a natural!" "She's doing a great job to have
so little preparation time." "Yoanna is going to be huge."
She would get warm applause everytime she appeared during the week.
At that same moment in Petro Zillia's show, another spark ignited; Yoanna's transition
from television to catwalk marked the second such recent jump, following Paris
Hilton's Spring 2004 runway debut, but it was clearly the first time for a non-celebrity
personality. Yoanna is likeable and talented, and like the American Idol
participants, not professionally trained. Yet here she was, living the fashion
model dream. Hollywood had pulled off the unimaginable, transforming a bright,
attractive young woman into a fashion star. That realization made many in the
audience sit up and take notice, and it sparked the imagination of the fashion
circuit.
| FACTS
ABOUT YOANNA HOUSE (from the Official UPN website for America's
Next Top Model) |
| age: 23 |
height: 5'11" |
weight: 134 |
| birthdate:
04/08/1980 |
hometown: Jacksonville,
FL |
occupation:
babysitter/clothing designer |
| favorites:
"Breakfast at Tiffany's", "Wonder Years", Indie pop
music, sumo wrestling, rally racing |
Yoanna House's appearance on the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week runways also
added a heartwarming element to Los Angeles Fashion Week itself, which is
working hard to establish Los Angeles as a bonafide fashion powerhouse.
Where her agent could have saved Yoanna's debut for a summer event in Europe,
it seemed most appropriate that her first catwalks would be in Los Angeles
near Hollywood. The combination hinted at the one of the important motivations
behind Los Angeles Fashion Week - establish a direct proximity and intimate
connection between the glamour of television and movie stars and the fashion
scene. Hollywood is bringing the international fashion scene to Los Angeles.
Yoanna appeared in the Petro Zillia Fall 2004 Collection fashion show wearing
a sherbert striped wool jacket, wrapped over a matching print blouse with
knit waist section and a banana wool pleated skirt. The look is festive,
crisp, and very jazzy. Reminiscent of the speak-easy era, Tochterman's full
line-up of wool-accented fruit colors made for a Fall 2004 collection that
promises to sweeten the dinner parties this October. Tochterman's gentle
layering of preppy jackets and luscious wool skirts was the perfect forum
for Yoanna's interpretation of the Audrey Hepburn style of the early 2000's.

RELATED STORY: MODELS
WITH CEREAL BACKSTAGE
New Total Protein Lower-Carb Cereal Was a Hit With Los Angeles Models and
Designers During Fashion Week
First Major Food
Company to Offer a Cereal for a Low-Carb Lifestyle
 April
2004 (Newstream) -- New Total Protein cereal from General Mills was in
demand backstage at this year's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox
Studios in Los Angeles. High-profile models such as Yoanna House and Mercedes
Scelba-Shorte (America's Top Model) were seen crunching while preparing
backstage, and show attendees Nicky Hilton and Kimberly Stewart had their
taste of the lower-carb, higher-protein cereal while visiting with designers
after the shows.
Total Protein was
introduced in response to consumer demand for reasonably priced lower-carb,
higher-protein products that offer the nutrition and taste of traditional
cereals. With 100% of the Daily Value of 11 vitamins and minerals, eight
grams of net carbs, and a hearty 13 grams of protein, Total Protein cereal
is an easy way for consumers to moderate their carbohydrate intake, while
enjoying the great taste and nutritional benefits of a familiar brand.
Lloyd Klein kicked
off Fashion Week on March 29th at 12:00 p.m. The show marked Klein's miraculous
return to the runway after a devastating car crash in February left him
in critical condition forcing him to cancel his New York presentation.
Following Klein were Rachel Palley, Coco Clicks, Maria Bianco Nero, Petro
Zillia and Gen Art. Continuing throughout the week were Von Dutch Kids,
Michelle Mason, Tomer, Rami Kashou, Custo Barcelona, Pegah Anvarian, Jenni
Kayne, Karanina, Monah Li, Sue Wong, Naqada, Heike Jarick, Sheri Bodell,
Trina Turk, Lords, Davies, Frankie B., MartinMartin, Single, John Sakalis,
Editte Keshishyan, Danang, Corey Lynn Calter, Richard Tyler, Shay Todd,
Joe's Jeans, Grey Ant, Eduardo Lucero, Oligo Tissew for Oliver Twist,
Susana Mercedes, Sanctuary and Louis Verdad.
About Total Protein
Available nationwide
in March 2004, Total Protein consists of lightly sweetened toasted wheat
flakes. Each ¾ cup serving of Total Protein contains 13 grams of protein
and 8 grams of net carbs, as well as 100% of the Daily Value of 11 vitamins
and minerals, including B-vitamins to help release energy, and antioxidant
vitamins C and E to help maintain a healthy immune system. Total Protein
follows the nutrition tradition established in 1961 with the introduction
of Total cereal. Since Total was introduced more than 40 years ago for
a "vitamin conscious public," the brand has continued to be a leader in
meeting the nutritional needs of Americans.
"It is important that
people follow a health plan that includes exercise and a healthy eating
plan - and that includes some carbohydrates," said Helenbeth Reiss Reynolds,
MPH, RD. "Consumers can miss out on key nutrients with some of the popular
low-carb diets, and Total Protein is an excellent source of vitamins and
minerals."
General Mills is a
leading maker of consumer foods and has created such favorite brands as
Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Green Giant, Old El Paso, Cheerios, Wheaties,
other Big G cereal brands, Yoplait, Progresso, and more. General Mills
is also a leading supplier of wholesome and tasty baking and other food
products to the foodservice and commercial baking industries.
The other cereals
in the Total family are Total Whole Grain, Total Raisin Bran, Brown Sugar
and Oat Total and Total Corn Flakes.

2004 FASHION
The
76th Annual Academy Awards, Oscars® 2004 fashion...
Color trends highlighted the Oscars® 2004 Red
Carpet - delicious caramels, creamy vanillas, and glittery
cafe au lait set the tone for the 2004 formal evening
gown season. Slinky and soft, most actresses opted for
well known silhouettes with modern touches of border
fancy. Julia Roberts presented and wore a body skimming
cocoa gown with plunging neckline and shimmery waist
brooch. Naomi Watts was electric in a heavy beaded and
sequined gold strapless dress. Angelina Jolie exuded
drama in satin charmeuse, calling her look "sexy."
Perhaps the most surprising fashion statement of the
night was Johnny Depp's new haircut, which respected
his quirky persona while dressing up for his big Best
Actor Nomination night.

GOLDEN
GLOBES 2004 FASHION
The
2004 Golden Globes fashion was a meadow of pale-hued
flowers with frothy dresses in pale rose, apricot,
and peach blossoms. Black, wine, and dark blue evening
gowns and cocktail dresses stood out this year amid
all the light creams and taupes, bringing a delightful
mix of color palettes to the awards show. Notable
fashion winners this year happily included two awards
winners.
Charlize
Theron glowed in a creamy banana chiffon spring dress
with romantic ruffles along the hips and shoulders.
Cut with a v-back, thin spaghetti straps accented her
tall, curvy frame. Her curls were swept up on one side
with a sparkling barrette, a new trend this year seen
on other red carpet fashionistas. Winner of best screenplay
and best motion picture musical or comedy, Sofia Coppola
captured the essence of the independent modern woman
in her vintage Azzedine Alaia black cocktail dress and
understated flats. Another fashion standout was the
ever-glamorous Uma Thurman, looking sleek in a periwinkle
lavender evening gown. Fitted at the waist, the mid-weight
charmeuse satin cascaded in flounced ruffles down the
front, with peek-a-boo lilac tulle underlay showcasing
her jeweled strappy heels.
Nicole Kidman charmed the fans in a hot flapper dress
designed by Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent. Gold and
cream sequins shined on the halter dress with a deep
plunging neckline and sheer chiffon front. Godet inserts
around the knees kept the ensemble from being too heavy,
and Kidman topped off the '20s look with a whimsical
gold headband and blond ringlets. The men opted for
more dinner jackets and ties and less tuxedos this year.
Clint Eastwood was dashing in a white bow tie and dinner
jacket, and Elijah Wood gets high fashion marks for
his vintage dark green velvet blazer and shimmering
gold silk tie.

Fall
/ Winter 2003-2004 Fashion - Button Up or Tie Me Down
"We're outta here." Fall 2003 fashion proclaims the end of reflection and
the time to suit up and go. Layers are in; updated jackets are substantial
and detailed. Narciso Rodriquez shows slick black and white trenchcoats
inspired by motocross looks; Trussardi goes the other way with rust and
copper leather trenches with lace up fireman boots. Both share the message
of Fall 2003 fashion designers - the urban creature has mused for long enough.
Not that she's any less female. Laura Biagiotti shows knit creations in
cable white and dark blue that caress and comfort, with beading and trim
in purple and olive. Emmanul Ungaro sends forth his tundra warriors with
lilac impressions; Fendi presents space-age walking jackets with the illusion
of polypropylene and the very real luxury of satin. Anna Molinari presents
shimmery mini skirts with pleated horizontal satin bordering. Dirk Bikkemberg
presents sassy satin shirts for the updated wardrobe with fancy knits and
asymmetric zippered riding tops (still emphasizing the legs but with dark
tights).
The drama heightens when the coat comes off - designer collections enhance
the ribbon dress with panels and lace bordering. Corseted evening gowns
reveal the Fall 2003 underworld, where contemporary influences give way
to bordello styles reinterpreted in latex for a sportswear-obsessed culture.
Fall / Winter 2003-2004 Trend Highlights...
Japanese culture, extreme sportswear detailing, chokers and chandelier earrings,
full-length gowns, strings and straps, Las Vegas nightlife, black &
white, color block, ladies who lunch...

Fall/Winter
2003/04 - Jackets & Coats
Warm up to cable knit sweater coats, moto jackets and
belted winter coats
Trenchcoats are hot this fall and winter season, transforming
from summer's lightweight silks and rayons to season appropriate heavy weights
like wool, cotton, and synthetic blends. Color is toned down, with signature
palettes in greys, ochres, and browns. An indispensable fall fashion item
is the fitted canvas twill cargo blazer, in a range of subdued neutral colors.
Another key look is a cropped cable knit hoodie cardigan, layered under
a jean jacket. Accent colors add dash to cargo blazers with dusty pastels
and sparks of bright color.
Narciso Rodriguez sixties-inspired mod wool winter coats are more tailored
to the body and offer a perfect space age lift-off to Marc Jacobs spring
collection. Classic denim jackets and pea coats also continue to dominate,
especially with fur trimmed collars for colder weather. Streetwear windbreakers
and zip up jackets find a home in ski chalet chic. Other Arctic influences
include Scandinavian embroidery on suede and fleece winter coats, embellished
with Eskimo-like natural shell and wood toggle buttons.
The 1980's trend continues with layered knit blazers and cashmere sweaters
which pair well with mini-skirts. Michael Kors fur lined wool car coat with
belted waist is perfect for the work week, while his distressed leather
jacket with jewel neckline and 80's punk metal hardware is pure weekend
rebellion. The motocross look is a hip and polished trend in outerwear this
fall/winter season, with the cross stiching, graphic abstracts, and tailored
lines of the raceways. |

Fit to a Tea
- Fall/Winter 2003/04
Short dresses reinterpreted by the designers
Traditionally more informal, short dresses are now sneaking
past the doorman of many formal events. And why not, considering the lush
fabrics and intricate detailing favored by today's fit and toned women.
Nicole Miller's knee-length black silk gown with antique gold has a plunging
v-neck and an exiting swish that rivals floor skimming gowns. Her shiny
crinkle wine taffeta pleated bustier mini-dress reaches to mid-thigh and
should be a staple for every Nicole Miller aficionado.
Jessica McClintock's short dresses in heavy satin with underlays of crinoline
and tulle, some going to thigh lengths, have a winter skating wonderland
appeal. Classic tea length frocks with ruched bodices and aspirin dotted
lace get a little extra fullness with a crinoline underskirt. Topped off
at the waist with a rose corsage and ribbon, these short Jessica McClintock
dresses are reminiscent of retro 1950's, but in softer fabrics and leaner
cuts. Her tea length dresses range from ankle to mid-calf. A three-quarter
cashmere cardigan and a little satin handbag is all you'll need to complete
the look of the season.
Los Angeles designer Ana Capri's light hearted circle skirts of cotton with
embroidered roses peekaboo with linings of wispy tulle in contrasting colors.
Knee-length skirts call for some serious footplay: wear with beaded sandals
or flip flops, California style, or dress it up with some ultra high heel
Mary Janes, ala New York.
For the romantic, BCBG Max Azria's under-the-knee to mid-calf designs are
dreamy in lingerie-inspired stylings and adornments. Silk charmeuse knee
length dresses highlight sensuous lace bodice trimmings. BCBG's mid thigh
mini-dresses with softly ruffled hemlines in silk chiffon prints look divine
when matched with short daywear trenchcoats.
For workday into evening, Calvin Klein has a subdued palette of knee length
skirts and mid-calf tailored suits in wines, olives, and basic black, in
easy garbadine wool and blends. As always with short dresses, elongate the
legs with complimentary colored hose and a stunning pair of high heels.

Solar Flirt - Summer 2003 Party
Catwalk looks for summer and fall nights
There was no mystery regarding the theme of San Francisco's Catwalk summer
show held at 111 Mina in the SOMA District of the city - flirtiness is hip again.
Betsey Johnson's party styles flitted and fluttered down the short but dramatic
runway in the art gallery/dance hall venue for an audience of hipster dance music
fans while Catwalk's local designer sample sale introduced San Francisco
trend-conscious night crawlers to labels like Sorella (bags), Rebecca Overmann
(sterling jewelry) and Sira.O (scarves). For more information about Catwalk,
visit Mystery
Girl Productions.
Meanwhile on the catwalk, Betsey Johnson's looks included Knit mini-skirts and
clingy off-shoulder tops in 80's new wave colors like hot pink, lime, and black
pair as luscious separates. The designs work well with the quintessential embroidered
rosebud slip dresses and frilly tutus we've come to expect from Betsey Johnson.
Sexy dresses are her mainstay and this season is no exception. Long satin gowns
in coral and turquoise flare at the ankle, creating a dramatic walk. Sweet empire
waists done up in layered chiffon with tiny satin ribbon bows add a feminine touch.
Details like lace-up backs and matching tasseled chiffon wraps complete the exuberant
collection. On the Web at http://www.BetseyJohnson.com.

Breaking
the Waves - Summer 2003
Resort and surf swimwear crossover
With all the crossovers between resort and surf swimwear this summer
2003, a few key trends break the waves. Retro knits and vintage inspired
styles like l rings give a nod to 1960's resort while functioning
as stylish and modern active swimsuits. Bikinis by La Perla and Gottex
pay homage to the retro trend of 2003. ow-rise
belted bottoms and halter bikinis with wooden
hoops.
Maillots are hottest this summer in geometric transitions, bold prints
or strategically placed, abstract cut-outs in solid colors. One-piece
swimsuits from Israeli designer Diva
by Rachel Pappo explode with geometric color. When paired with
a gauzy sleeveless tunic or simple cover-up, the look is effortless
resort.
Ethnic prints are warm and sultry in tiger and leopard safari motifs,
especially with hand embroidery and appliques. Sauvage swimwear heats
up the look with buttery suede lace detailing, Swarovski crystals,
and gold appliques. |

Rhapsody
in Blue...
Spring formal fashions
in blue inspire hope.
Sky blue, aqua, and baby blue hues mark the delicate formal dress
designs of Spring 2003,
as well as shades of sage and cornflower and blush colors. Black on
white mixed with color blocks portray classic style. Blue is the color
of hope, friendship, and peace, timely themes for a turbulent world.
Styles like overlays
and flyaways add romance and charm, while simple silhouettes of
empire, a-line, and princess shapes make the look timeless.
Spring 2003 fashion designers show blue highlights in silk tops, polka
dot dresses, and crinkle fabrics. Where you find blush you find blue,
and this season look for blush and blue hints in collections from
DKNY, BCBG, Calvin Klein, and others. |

Los Angeles Fashion : Renée
Bardot In
Renée Bardot's birthplace of Frankfurt, Germany, her destiny was shaped at an
early age as a primary fashion leader. Simply, she played dress-up with fabric
scraps in her father's leather clothing company. It was in this arena, Renée would
create elaborate gowns and costumes by draping chiffon or other discarded fabric
over her five-year old frame. Renée's father had taken notice of his design protégé
and began to teach her everything there was to learn about the hand-sewn coats,
pants and jackets he sold and distributed throughout Germany in the late sixties.
Aware of her talent, her father took the pre-teen Renée under his
tutelage, apprenticing the budding designer. Renée's father was a
haute couture sewer and he passed the generations-old art of creating
clothing down. By twenty was selling her designs to fashion forward
stores.
Renée
moved to Amsterdam were she honed her business skills and opened her
first store, Jezebel. She then worked as an assistant to the late
designer C. Gordon. Nationally known in Germany, C. Gordon - along
with his peers, Karl Lagerfeld, Wolfgang Joop, Uta Raasch and Iris
von Arnim were part of the burgeoning German cultural Renaissance.
Gordon's mastery of draping and European pattern-making greatly influenced
Renée and her designing skills took on whole new artistic bent. read

FASHION FEATURE: 2003
EMMY AWARDS (55th ANNUAL) Emmys
Fashion 2003... Many of the stars at the 55th Emmy's awards show
took their style queues from the color palettes of the New York Spring 2004 fashion
shows. The front rows glowed in evening gowns of sunset hues like fuschia, mango,
pinks, and blues. Creamy neutrals also shined on award nominees Lena Olin and
Jennifer Garner of Alias, both exquisite in ivory and pale peach satin dresses.
Presenter Jeri Ryan made a dramatic entrance in her revealing silk charmeuse
evening gown of silvery cream with deep v-neck plunge. Plunging v-neck gowns,
popular last year, were back again along with a new evening trend towards
dropped waists. Dropped waist dresses accented the figures of Christina
Applegate, in a pale blue pleated chiffon formal dress by Valentino, and
Courtney Thorne Smith, in a classic Herve Leger elongated crystal tiered
black dress. Sarah Jessica Parker color-matched with husband Matthew Broderick's
dusty rose tie as she stunned the Emmy audience in a pink Chanel confection
of a ballgown. Ruched and gathered in chiffon, tulle, and sequins, the gown
had a subdued high/low hemline, showcasing her famous feet.
Debra Messing claimed her Emmy award clad in an Elie Saab evening ball gown
with sweeping back train, Jimmy Choo heels, Cartier ring, and H. Stern chandelier
earrings. Strapless and gathered at the side, the amber and copper design
of the dress perfectly framed her winning smile. Notable fashion marks for
the men went to winner Jon Stewart's trim black suit and subtly sparkling
black tie and Joe Pantoliano's vest and tie in light blue satin with white
polka dots. Gorgeous gowns and tuxedos abounded, but this year's fashion
focus at the Emmy's was all ears: dripping chandelier earrings in precious
jewels. Best chandelier earring styles included Debra Messing's triple-tiered
pink tourmaline teardrops and Jane Kaczmarek gold arabesque shoulder dusters.

Formalwear
Winter/Spring 2002
New Commitments bring New Style Perhaps no formalwear season of
the last 30 years is more important to the fashion industry than the Year 2002
season - designers, retailers, and boutiques anticipate a surge of special occassion
shopping as American consumers reaffirm their commitment to family, community,
and charity through weddings and events. The New
Fashion Values of 2002 have already influenced formalwear styles for prom
dresses, bridal
gowns and bridesmaid
dresses, and special
occassion evening gowns.
The first influence is the highlighted bodice; designers this season are
placing more emphasis on fitted shapes with striking color and embroidery
or ornaments. In our cover shot from Macy's Passport '01, Jessica
McClintock's fairy green, plunging v-neck gown is crisply molded and
matched to the extravagant floral inlay of the skirt. Also shown is the
deep backline and decorative mosaic design of another Jessica McClintock
creation. With the globalization
of fashion trends, simplifying and highlighting the bodice in formalwear
designs broadens the designer's reach across clutural expectations.
The second influence is the bold feminine shape; designers are using sheath,
trumpet,
princess,
mermaid,
and a-line
styling to create curvy dresses, many with corseted or structured undergarments,
reasserting the womanly look in this season's formal line. Gone are the
demure straight silhouettes and the tailored workwear looks of the late
1990s. The post-9/11/01 woman attends her public as a proud yet traditionally
sensual creature.
Which leads to the third influence, the new emphasis on soft, feminine expression
through silk and chiffon
overlays, lace
bordering, and beaded
or rhinestone
hems, lines, and straps. While the 2002 party-goer is simply elegant with
brilliant structural accents, the 2002 bride dons a flowing gown overlayed
with embroidered or appliqued sheath. Soft satin silk is the fabric of choice,
with form-enhancing embellishments to match the wearer's personality. |

Fall
2001 Fashion - Modern Reality
The
New (1990s) Rules Don't Apply - Watching the movie Serendipity (©2001
Miramax Films) in October of 2001 is like watching a home video of a story from
another time; a time before the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11th. Serendipity
is a romantic comedy about the human desire for destiny fulfillment in our search
for love. Underneath, the movie is a classy, chic romp through modern innocence
in the age of American prosperity. The lead couple, Jonathan Trager (played by
John Cusack) and Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) are attractive, successful, even
witty characters made out to be your average young American adults affected by
infatuation. Yet their journey is alive with scenes of runway fashion, contemporary
designer home accents, and intellectual references to literature and theater.
Jonathan and Sara are portrayed as common Westerners, beautiful people with sophisticated,
luxurious lives and crisp, tailored personalities. If only those images had appeared
before the collapse of WTC Tower I and Tower II, perhaps the love story would
have connected to the aspirations of a young America looking for new mythologies.
The opportunity to believe again, for the first time since the roaring 1920s,
that life would always be good. Alas, wrapped in the dense mental imagery of churning
smoke and ash from September 11th, Serendipity is like a dream remembered
from an unblemished youth. And a lasting documentation of the hopeless romantic
in all Americans that existed until the Fall Season of 2001. more...
Spring and Summer 2001 Fashion
- Drama and Fantasy
For
Spring and Summer 2001, drama returned to fashion, with bold prints, lush colors,
and cross-cultural motion. Inspired by the epic cinema of Gladiator, Spring
2001 celebrates fashion's global explosion. While the major fashion shows in New
York, Paris, London, and Milan lead the way, exciting new shows in Australia,
Hong Kong, Brazil, and Vancouver are popping up. The result is a Spring 2001 season
full of vigor and variety; Metrofashion Themes for Spring and Summer 2001 are
Fantasy,
Dance,
Conquest,
and Fireworks,
representing the growing momentum of globalism and the optimism of the New Millennium.
First up is Fantasy. Dreams and visions of playfulness and grandeur abound in
Spring 2001 collections such as Blumarine, Burani, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni,
and Versace. European designers went floral and geometric and big this year with
silk prints, sheer wraps, and daring halters. It seems the Pretty Woman of Spring
2000 has grown up! more

Fall and Winter 2000 Fashion
- Mod Squad Glamour
Fall 2000 fashion - new wave chic returns to fashion. Cool city chic, retro designs,
and luxurious details define Fall 2000 and the return of glamour. Themes for Fall
2000 are Mod,
Leather,
Patterns,
and Beauty.
The mood of a movie sometimes determines its legacy. So goes it with Mod Squad,
the hip 1999 cinema takeoff on the late 1960s-early 1970s television series.
The movie is dark, whimsical, and brash, framing the awkward world of the the
late 1990s American youth, a world full of wealth and glamour, but devoid of purpose
or dignity. Trapped in this world with no spiritual center are three young handsome
rebels, each with attitude and personality, led by 90s cult heroine Claire Daines.
Their stylish dress and haughty attitude sets them apart from the homegenous youth
culture of the day. Fitting then that Mod Squad's legacy (18 months later)
would be a Fall 2000 fashion season tagged by the media as "Glamour is Back."
Fitting because that 90s culture so transparently depicted in Squad provides
the glam juice for much of Fall 2000. more
